Short answer: pick the phrase people really search, use it clearly in the pin title, description, image text and board, link to a page that delivers on it, and keep publishing new pins. Everything else in this guide is a refinement of that loop.

How Pinterest search works

Pinterest does not publish its ranking formula, but its guidance makes the main inputs clear. When someone searches, it looks for pins that match the query and are likely to be useful to that person. It judges relevance mostly from:

  • The pin title, one of the clearest signals of what the pin is about.
  • The pin description, which is not shown in the feed but helps Pinterest decide who to show the pin to.
  • The image, including any text on it.
  • The board, because the board name and description add context to every pin saved there.
  • The destination page, which should match what the pin promised.

Pinterest SEO is not the same as Google SEO. On Google you optimize a page. On Pinterest you optimize each pin, and you can publish many pins for the same page, each aimed at a different phrase. That is the reason fresh pins matter so much.

Set up your account for search

  1. Use a business account. It is free and unlocks Pinterest Analytics.
  2. Claim your website so your pins are attributed to you.
  3. Enable rich pins if your site supports them.
  4. Write a clear profile name and bio that name your one or two main topics. The Pinterest bio generator gives you options to edit.

Pinterest keyword research

Every step after this depends on knowing which phrases people type. Start with Pinterest itself: search autocomplete, the related terms shown under the search bar, and Pinterest Trends. Favour specific, long-tail phrases ("high protein vegetarian meal prep") over broad ones ("recipes"). Our full walkthrough is in the Pinterest keyword research guide, and the free Pinterest keyword generator turns one seed word into long-tail ideas.

Optimize pin titles

Titles can be up to 100 characters, and the first words are the most visible, so put your main phrase first.

Keep hashtags and emoji out of titles and make sure the title matches the headline on the image. The pin title generator gives you formulas to adapt.

Optimize pin descriptions

Write two or three natural sentences. Open with the main phrase, say what the reader gets and who it is for, then finish with a short call to action. Avoid comma-separated keyword lists, which read as spam. Try the pin description generator for a draft and the SEO description optimizer to rewrite an old one. Optimize the pin image

  • Size: 2:3, for example 1000 x 1500 px. See the Pinterest pin size guide.
  • Text overlay: a short, readable headline that matches the title.
  • Clear subject: show the result, product or main idea, not a generic stock photo.
  • Alt text: describe what the image shows.

Optimize boards and your profile

Name each board with a literal search phrase ("Healthy Breakfast Recipes", not "Morning Yum"), add a two or three sentence description that uses it naturally, and save each pin to the most relevant board first. The board name generator and board description generator help with the wording, and how to organize pinterest boards covers structure.

Fresh pins and consistency

Pinterest rewards new ideas. A fresh pin is a new image or video, even if it links to a page you have pinned before. Publish several different pins for each important post, each with its own image and angle on the keyword. Do not just re-save the same pin. See how often to post on Pinterest for a realistic rhythm.

The page your pin links to

If the page does not deliver what the pin promised, people leave and the pin earns fewer helpful signals. Make sure the page matches the pin title, loads fast on a phone, and is linked directly with no surprise redirects.

Where hashtags fit

Hashtags are optional and play a small role. If you use them, add two to five specific ones at the end of the description. Read Pinterest hashtags for details, or try the hashtag generator.

Measure what is working

In Pinterest Analytics, sort pins by impressions to see which phrases Pinterest is showing, then by outbound clicks to see which pins send traffic. For pins with impressions but few clicks, test a new image or a clearer title in a fresh pin. In your website analytics, check referral traffic from Pinterest. Pinterest SEO checklist

  • One main search phrase, confirmed in Pinterest autocomplete
  • Title leads with that phrase and is under 100 characters
  • Description opens with the phrase in a natural sentence
  • 2:3 image with a readable headline that matches the title
  • Alt text that describes the image
  • Saved first to the most relevant, clearly named board
  • Links to a page that delivers on the title
  • A new image, not a copy of a pin you already published

Frequently asked questions

What is Pinterest SEO?

It is making your pins, boards and profile easy for Pinterest search to understand, so they show up when people search your topic. It mostly means using the phrases people search in your titles, descriptions, image text and board names.

How long does Pinterest SEO take to work?

Pinterest does not publish a timeline. Pins often keep getting impressions for weeks or months, which is slower to start than social feeds but lasts longer. Judge results over a few months.

Do hashtags help Pinterest SEO?

Very little. Keywords in titles, descriptions and board names matter far more.

Do I need a business account?

It is free and gives you Analytics and website claiming, so yes, it is strongly recommended.

How many keywords should one pin target?

One main phrase, plus one or two natural variations in the description. More becomes keyword stuffing.
